Hoop Running in Croquet: Rules & Etiquette

Hi this is Ray and today I’m going to show you hoop running in the game of croquet. Hoop running is the most essential part of the game and what we want to do is we want to make sure that we can get through an easy hoop shot every time. In order to do that, what we need to do is we need to understand that the ball must go through the hoop and go about 2 feet beyond so that we can continue our turn. So what we want to do for this is we want to give the ball enough forward spin to be able to fight its way through the wicket and we also want to hit it softly enough that it’s not going to bounce off or skid. So what we want to do is we want to stand just in back of the ball, we want to place our mallet so that it’s just slightly angled forward which will give us the forward spin that we need. So we’re going to take our mallet, we’re going to aim it nicely, we’re going to bring it back and follow through. Now it’s important that when we do this, we don’t hit the uprights with our mallet, we don’t hit the uprights with the ball, if possible. The other type of hoop shot that you need to be able to hit are the angles. Now with the angles it’s very important that you have the forward spin because you’re likely to hit one of the uprights, you also want to have that same smooth touch, you don’t want to hit it too hard and you don’t want to push it. So what we’re going to do is we’re going to set up just like before, just back of the ball, angle of mallet just slightly, we’re going to bring it back and when we take the shot we’re going to watch the ball, we’re not going to watch the hoop, we want to see where we hit it to make sure that we hit it properly because we already know our angle, it’s correct. So we’re going to watch the ball, we’re going to bring it back, and run the hoop. Again the object of the game is to run as many hoops as possible, so you really want to practice these shots, make sure that no matter what the angle, no matter what the distance, you’ll be able to hit these shots as long as they’re within the zone. So go out there, practice these and you’ll be great at croquet.
