Various Grips in the Game of Croquet: Rules & Etiquette
Hi this is Ray and today we’re going to talk a little bit about the different grips that are used in the game of croquet. Now the first grip that people often use is called the Solomon grip. The Solomon grip is where both hands are placed with the knuckles facing out over the shaft of the mallet, this allows for plenty of back swing as well as plenty of power for coming through. The second grip that people often use is called the Irish grip. Now the Irish grip is where both hands are placed behind the mallet, slightly lower on the shaft, this allows for a little less back swing, but plenty of forward momentum. And the final grip that people often use is called the standard grip. The standard grip consist of one hand facing outward, one hand facing inward with the palm up and this allows for a good amount of back swing, plenty of forward momentum and good accuracy. One variation on this standard grip is the pencil grip and this is where the back hand will have the index finger pointing down on the shaft, this allows some people to have a little more accuracy in their shots. So what I would suggest is that you go out there, grab your mallet, try all three of these and see which one best suits your game and which one you’re most comfortable with. Thanks.
