Approaching Your Shot: Croquet Rules & Etiquette
Hi this is Ray and today I’m going to show you how to make an approach shot. An approach shot is a croquet shot where you send your ball in front of a wicket so that you can run it and you send the other ball to the other side of the wicket, so that you can use it to continue your turn. So what we’re going to do in this particular case is use a split shot, now in this case we want to send the red ball in that direction, so we’re going to line the yellow ball up pointing in that direction because we want the yellow ball to go in this direction we’re going to have to cut our angles. The way we do that is once again, red ball this way, yellow ball this way, cut the angle, straight towards the hoop, so we’re going to swing in the direction of that hoop. Now because we’re going to need the red ball to go farther, we’re going to have to use a half roll here. so we’re going to grip low with our top hand, grip way down with our right hand, step up to the plane of the ball, I’m going to bring it back and pop it. As you can see, our yellow ball goes directly in front of the wicket and our red ball is directly on the other side. So now we would be able to run the wicket and we would be able to hit the ball and continue our break. The approach is very important for continuing breaks, you’re going to need to practice this a lot to be able to get it to where it’s useful for you in games, but you’ll use it all the time once you get the hang of it.
