Now that we’ve done the annealing to your new pen, what we need to do now is sharpen it. Even though you may have purchased it and it feels sharp, this is a factory sharp and you still need to take the time right now to sharpen it. I keep a little oil in here, put a little oil on the stud, I’ve already done that and we need to support the end of the tip with your finger. On these particular tips here, you need to keep about a 15 degree angle and go back and forth with it, changing the sides and this will put a better tip point. The reason you want to resharpen it is because as you’re doing your wood burning you want the pen to glide through the wood and you don’t want to have to pull it through the wood. Once it’s sharpened, remember 15 degree angle on this particular type pen. You also have different types of pens too, this particular pen is a blunt end pen and what you want to do is you want to do this one at about a 35 degree angle, same way. This one I am resharpening and if you notice, you can go back and forth with this. Once you’ve sharpened it, then you proceed on to your honing. The reason you want to hone this is as you go back and forth, sometimes at the very end and you made need almost a magnifying glass to see it, you can get a small bur on the end of it. So, this particular one you can make yourself, I have an old belt and if you remember years ago when you’d see the barber shop people and they would sharpen their blades, they would always have a leather strap and basically, we’re doing the same thing right here. What we want to do is we want to move the little bur that may be on the end of it. Then again, put some oil on the strap and in this case, use the same angle and it’s 15, and you want to pull back and as you pull back each time, you may want to go from side to side, you do not want to go forward on this because if you do, you see that, I’m digging into the leather. You want to keep all your movements with this going straight back. Now, once we have had annealed it, we’ve resharpened it, now we’ve honed it down, we’re ready to start our wood burning.
