How to Lay Out a Wall Addition in your Garage

Hi! This is John on behalf of Expert Village. In this video clip, I will be talking about laying out a wall. The first thing that I am going to do is just set my studs in the approximate location that they are going to go. Next I am going to mark my first stud since I know it goes at the end of my wall. I am going to go ahead and make that flush and I am going to draw a line at the end of my stud. I’m going to put an x on the side where my stud is going to go. Next I am going to measure out 16 inches from the end of my board and I am going to put another line. This time I am going to put an x on the side of my line to the 17 inch mark. The reason we do this is that when we put our tape measure from center to center of where our stud will go, it will be exactly 16 inches. So from stud to stud, it will be 16 inches on center. Next I am going to continue on down the line every 16 inches and I am going to mark where 16 inches is and put an x. Mark, put an x and I am going to do this for the entire length. After I have marked my bottom board which is called the sole plate, I am going to move my top board which is called the top plate into position and I am just going to butt it up to where the other board is and I am going to transfer my measurements. I am going to go ahead and continue this down the entire top plate.
