Understand the Different Paddling Techniques You Can Use While Surfing
Hi! This is Pat Weber with the San Diego Surfing Academy for expertvillage.com. In this clip we are going to talk about paddling techniques. How to get through the breaking waves out to where the fun is. When you are paddling, you are heading straight at the wave. Perpendicular to the wave you are going to do a little push up as you go through the wave. Another technique to get through the breaking wave is to flip the board over: it is called a turtle. When you flip the board over and the wave passes by, you are going to pull yourself back up on the board and begin paddling. You are creating little resistance. Out in the water we are going to show you how to duck dive. That is where you are going to push the nose of the board under the water, and your shoulders and head are going under the white water and popping up on the other side. Again it creates little resistance in making yourself efficient as you go through the wave. Also if you are riding a longboard or a foam board, it is going to be real hard to duck dive. You slide off the board perhaps, grab the nose of the board, and you are going under with the white water traveling over your head. What you're doing is creating little resistance, making it easier to slice out through the waves to get to where the fun is.
