How to Surf on an Ocean Wave

Hi! This is Pat Weber with the San Diego Surfing Academy for expertvillage.com. In this clip we look at taking off on a wave. Before we can stand up and ride away, we've got to paddle with enough sprint speed and stamina to enter the wave on our own power. We are using a crawl stroke, like a freestyle type stroke. In order to gain enough momentum, you are going to feel the wave underneath you to give you lift—not quite time to stand up. It is when you get some momentum going down the face of the wave, you are being propelled without taking another stroke, that you can get your hands back here close to your wrist and think about doing a pop up.
