Flanger Effects for the Electric Guitar
Hi this is Gary Schutt, again. We’re talking about a guitar effect called a flanger. This is my dry signal, distorted and with the flanger on it gives you this. It’s an up and down sweeping motion, similar to a phaser, but a very different sound, kind of like an airplane taking off and landing. I like to put my flanger in the effects path before my distortion, you’ll get a much cleaner sound if you put it after, but I like to put it before for various noise effects, like if I turned regeneration and time completely up and I hit a harmonic. You get that sound. That’s how Prince does it. If you run your flanger after your distortion, that kind of sound won’t be as noticeable, you’ll have a much smoother, subtle sounding sound. Putting the flanger before your distortion and doing the Eddie Van Halen palm string thing also sounds cool. You can also use your flanger on your clean sound, it gives kind of a coursing effect, but a little bit different.
