Using Octaves in Metal Guitar
Hi, my name is Gary Schutt and we are talking about heavy metal guitar. Right now we are going to be talking about octaves. Octaves are the same note in different octaves. If we play a G, and then we play a G, 15th read E string, it’s the same note one octave up. One octave down and then we are going to play another G on the 10th thread A string, that’s an octave below the one we did on the G string. If we play the 3rd thread E string that’s another octave. These are all the same note in different octaves. So Let’s say we take the G on the 12th thread G string and the G on the high E string. In a G minor scale, move the octaves around. Let’s stay in G minor for a second and we are going to use the pentatonic scale all the way up here and do a cool trick using octaves. We are going to do the B flat on the top of the scale, the B flat underneath it and we are going to come down on the pattern like that. So it is B flat, F, C and G. A little confusing at first but sounds cool once you get it.
