Cutting in the Game of Spades

Hi, my name is Dan Kimbrough on behalf of expertvillage.com, in this clip we are going to discuss what cutting is when you are playing spades. Spades is a game which you have to follow suit. The person left of the dealer went first, they lead the ace of hearts. Now my partner not being able to bet the ace of hearts but still having to follow suit, has laid a low heart because they can't beat it, why lay a king or something is going to go to waste. This person again can't beat the ace and it doesn't matter there partner has already won this suit, won the hand because they have laid the ace of hearts. They lay another low one just to get rid of it. Now this is where cutting comes into play, spades you have to follow suit but I have no hearts. I got clubs, I got diamonds, I've got spades but I have no hearts because the other team is now winning this book right now. I can cut, I have no hearts but a card has to be played so I'm going to cut. Cutting is a when you lay trump on top of whatever is played now playing the 3 of spades even if it is lower than the ace of hearts it is a spade. Spade is trump so I have now cut hearts and I won the book. Now if my partner was winning the book I wouldn't probably have cut I probably would of thrown off and got rid of something else just like they have thrown off but we want the book, so this way I cut. Now the negative side to cutting is now tells everyone in the game I have no hearts so these two people are going to try not to play hearts because they know I don't have them and I'm cutting hearts with spades. The plus side is my partner knows that I have no hearts so what they might try to do is play more hearts knowing that they have them, I don't I'm going to cut, we are going to get more books.
