How to Fake an Attack in Fencing with a Feint

Hi! My name is Brad Bogus. Now I am going to guide you through some of the more advanced handwork involved in fencing. First thing I am going to show you is known as the feint. A feint is basically a fake attack. What you do with a feint is you go to show the opponent you are going to make an attack expecting them to make either a counter attack or a defensive perry. Right? You use the feint kind of in an intention to make a counter attack. So you estbalish right of away by starting the feint, then go for the perry or for a counter attack, you adjust accordingly. You make the feint, they go to hit, you perry, you repost. Okay? So to use the feint effectively you need to know two different techniques; the disengage and the cutover. A disenegage is a very small subtle movement of the sword kind of like drawing a circle with your finger tips. What you do essentially is make a small motion like a half circle in the air with your sword. What you are doing this for is you is you are going to make your feint and let's imagine your defender decides to make a perry. So you feint forward, they go to perry forward, you disenggage by doing the small half circle completely making their blade miss yours, going underneath it, coming around for counter attack making your attack on them. So you feint, they go to perry, disengage which is a wither blade and make your counter attack and end of point. The cutover is much like a disengage except you make a cut over their blade or under it. It is a more dramatic way to disengage and it can come in handy in certain scenarios. So to show you how effective we use these, feint, they go to perry, disengage, attack. Feint, they go to perry, cutover, attack. Feint, they go to attack, perry, repost. You are going to want to get down the basics before you start doing the advanced maneuvers but these are different ways you can play establishing right of way in fencing.
