Hi my name is Brad Bogus. Now I’m going to show you how to make your basic counter attacks, also known as riposte. Now a riposte is different than a basic counter attack, whenever you’re fencing and an opponent comes at you with an attack what you’re going to do with your blade is the parry as I showed you, so you defend yourself and the attack you make next I generally called a parry riposte. You parry and then attack, the attack is known as a riposte because it’s made after your defensive maneuver. So the opponent comes to attack you and you peri you riposte. Basically, block attack. Block attack. What you’re doing is you’re guiding your right of way away from you and you’re establishing your own. By blocking your opponent’s attack you’re taking away their right away and giving you a window in which you can attack and establish right away in foil fencing. Now a counter attack works a little differently. A counter attack is how you attack without actually defending yourself from your opponent’s attack. Counter attacking is tricky because once an opponent attacks, he’s taking the right of way. You can’t really just attack him as he has a right of way because a fencer who has right of way, is the fencer who is going to score. So with the counter attack you want to make sure that you can avoid their blade at all cost, a lot of ways to do this is maneuvering your body in such a way that you can block or avoid their point and make your counter attack. So if an opponent comes at you establishing right of way, he makes his attack on you, so the sword is coming at my 4, I can lower or avoid his sword, make my counter attack which is without periing and if he misses and I score, I will establish right of way by avoiding his target.
