Hi! My name is Ken Marcou and I’m just going to talk a little bit about setting up your drum kit. Basically setting up your drum kit depends on what your goals are, what you’re playing and what type of effects you’re looking to get. I happen to play a mixture of some jazz techniques and some rock techniques but overall most drummers should have their drum kits setup in a consist way where you can hit everything without too much effort. If you’re sitting too low for instance you’re going to be exerting more effort than with otherwise be necessary to do everything, you want to have your center of gravity right about where I am now so that your arms fall so that they’re parallel to the drums without being too high or too low, if I was sitting lower then I would be playing kind of like this, if I was sitting higher then I would be playing kind of like this, neither of which my body naturally want to do. So when you’re holding the sticks put your arms like this…and they should be just above the drum heads of the snare and the floor tom, now I can hit everything in my drum kit with just a flick of the wrist, it’s never that much effort required to hit anything in the drum kit. This being said I have enough room to you know to get charismatic with my playing which is another very key element to playing drums, the drummer bring dynamics to the music and by definition the drums are dynamic so you need to play them that way, so you need to have enough room to bring that element into the band or into the music or into your playing but you need to be able to hit everything in the way that makes sense. So just to give you some examples I’m just going to play around the kit, notice that I never have to make too great an effort to hit any one thing.
