How to Prepare Potatoes for Homemade Mashed Potatoes
Today we are going to start by showing you how to make mash potatoes from scratch. I know that there is a million different recipes out there. It's an American Southern tradition, if you will. Today I am going to show you the basic preparation that you can alter in any way that you see fit with regards to seasoning or adding things of that nature. I've got a couple of Idaho Russet Potatoes here and I am going to leave the skin on because we want to leave them rustic and authentic that way. I've got a knife obviously that I am going to cut these down with and I want to cut them into small enough pieces so that we don't have to wait a long time for them to boil. I've got a pot of boiling water behind me and we are going to throw these in there on a stove top and allow them to become soft. Once they are done we are going to cut the fire down and just keep them warm for the next step and we'll come back and show you what we are going to do there. Also in the picture, you may see the Kitchen Aide Mixer right to my right and I like using the Kitchen Aide Mixer simply because it gets a really nice consistency on the potatoes once you pour in your wet ingredients and mix your potatoes all together. So this is the size that I am shooting for and this will cook quickly as far as that goes and that is what we are after. So we are going to go ahead and cut these 2 potatoes down and we will put them in the boiling water behind me. We'll come right back and show you the second step of the procedure for home made mashed potatoes.
