Infant Child CPR Instructions

Hi again, I’m Michelle of the AD HOC Group. Well now we’re ready to learn infant CPR. Infant CPR is a little different than for adults and children. Begin by checking for a response, to stimulate an infant, tap him firmly on the foot and talk loudly to him. Ask if he’s okay, call his name, say whatever you think of, but say it loudly. The point is to get any kind of response you can, if you get no response then check for breathing. Again, you’ll want to tilt the head back far enough to pull the tongue up and away from the back of the throat and to make the trachea straight. Remember that the infant airways are very tiny and very soft. Its easy to crimp the airway close when the head is either too far forward or too far back. Look, listen and feel for breaths, the same as with an adult. If none, then give two breaths. Cover the infant’s mouth and nose with your mouth, babies are nose breathers. Practice these steps, giving two breaths. As with the adult, the breath should be enough to raise the check, but no more than one second long. More than likely, the breath will be about a half a second.
