How to Check Your Oil

Hi! I’m William Myers with Subaru for Expert Village. Okay now we’re going to check your engine oil but the first thing we want to do is we want to start the car up, watch the oil light go off, shut the car off and then we’re going to check the oil. Now that we’ve started the car we’re going to check our oil, just pull the dip stick out which lives right in front has a little oil can on it, it’s yellow not hard to miss, wipe it off, reinstall in your dip stick tube, pull it back out and you can see right where the fluid level is. The top dot is full the top notch means that after you run it a while fluid expands, if it’s there it’s okay and if I wipe it off you can see that bottom dot. Now if you’re anywhere between the bottom dot and the top dot you don’t have to add, that top notch is fluid expands when it gets hot so if it’s at the top notch and you’ve been driving the car for 2 or 3 hours it’s okay to be there and if you’re checking it and it’s just a little above that top dot don’t worry a little over full isn’t going to hurt it, a lot over full will but a little won’t. Just reinstall your dip stick to and that’s how you check your oil.
