Maintaining Balance During CPR

Hi again, I’m Michelle of the AD HOC Group. We’re going to talk about maintaining balance when you’re doing the abdominal thrust maneuver. The person who is choking will be leaning forward, when you wrap your arms around his abdomen, there’s a very good chance that he can pull you off balance if he looses consciousness because he will tend to fall forward. You don’t want to fall on top of him, so here’s what you can do. Place one foot between the victim’s feet and brace yourself by leaning slightly backwards, if he collapses you can simply lower him to the floor and you won’t loose your balance. If he looses consciousness, he will need CPR, but first thing you’ll do for an adult is call 911 and get help and then you’ll resume CPR. If it’s a child, do two minutes of CPR and then call for help. When you’re giving breaths, check the airway to see if you can see the object and remove it. Don’t do any blind finger sweeps, but if you do see the object and you can pull it out, do so and then give two breaths.
