Building a Dog First Aid Kit

Hi I'm Dr. Adrienne Mulligan of Camp Verde Veterinary Clinic in Arizona and I'm here today to talk to you about how to put together a doggy first aid kit for those emergencies that you may run into at home and I'm here on behalf of expertvillage.com. Other item in your emergency kit might include toenail clippers which you could purchase at any pet store or online. Any type of scissors regular scissors, bandage type scissors, this are always really important and you really never have them when you want them. You should always have telfa pad you could buy these in the grocery store they are like a gauze that has a protective coating so they don't stick to the wound. These are nice to keep plus regular gauze which you could also buy at the drug store and this would be for cleansing or cleaning a wound. If you want to keep some type of bandage material vet wrap is very very popular and it stretches and it stick to itself and your biggest concern is you don't want to every put a bandage on a to tight. So we would talk about that when the time comes. You got tape that you could buy at the store just white tape that athletics use to bandage on again never put it to tight it is just to hold things against the skin or the fur. You should have something to stop bleeding this is styptic powder it could be purchase again on line or through any catalogs and you could also purchase styptic sticks theses are also for also stopping bleeding. Then you should have a good ear wash design for dogs. You should keep some KY gel for filling wounds to keep hair out to them. You should keep some ointment this is antibiotic ointment that would be like something like neosporin and this is a ear ointment this is actually prescription that you might get from your veterinarian at some point and time. Then you are going to want something to cleans with it could be Bernadine or chlorhexodine or just some antibacterial cleansing soap. Socks ...but it is like a sock so that you could put over a wound or over a bandage to just keep that dog from chewing at it so much and you are going to want towels things to dry and things to put over fracture animals. So towels, blankets, those kind of things are very important to have around.
