Finishing the Inside of a Clay Coil Pot

Hi! This is Roy Stringfellow for expertvillage.com. We’ve just about got our coil pot completed, but what we need to do now is go back in to the inside of the pot. Remember as we build it up, we smooth the inside and we were bringing the clay down toward the bottom. What we want to do right now is pull the clay that’s remaining there from where we stopped all the way back to the top. That’s going to help create a bond between the clay coils. You have to be very careful that you have your hand on the outside at the very same place that you’re putting this little tool on the inside. If you prefer, you can also use your fingers. It’s just that my hand is a little too fat to get in there, so what I’m going to do is pull the clay up like this all the way around the inside of the pot. Again, you want to be very careful that you have your hand kind of balancing kind of a counter push on the outside. So as you bring this tool around and pull that clay up, you’re smoothing the inside of the pot and binding the clay together just a little bit. I think you can see just a little bit in there how maybe that clay has been pulled to the top. It isn’t perfect but it’s probably just enough to be able to make sure that that clay bonds to itself. The next step in part of this process is now we can go to the outside of the pot and start pulling down the clay coils where we want the clay coils to overlap. This is where those of you who want to be real artistic about it and make all kinds of changes and things on your pot, this is the place to do that. You want to do it while it’s still in kind of the wet stage because we’re going to let this clay dry here pretty quick. You work yourself around, around the outside of the clay. This is the beginning of what we’re going to end up with.
