How to Measure for Installation of Deadbolt

Hi! I'm Daniel on behalf of Expert Village. In this particular clip, we are going to be measuring for the installation of a deadbolt. The first thing that you want to take into a count is the current backset of the existing hardware. The easiest way to measure that is to measure from the edge of the door to the highest point on the existing hardware. Now it would either be 2 3/8 inch backset or 2 ¾. As we measure here, you will notice that it is very clear. This is a 2 3/8 inch backset. The next thing that we want to determine is how far down the door we want to have the deadbolt or how far up we want it. Now a great estimate is simply go up 8 inches from the center of the old lock. So if you just measure up, put your finger there and just measure down we are right at at 36 ½ so we are going to put this right at 36. That is just going to be a easy number. Now I'm using a sharpie that is a very different color of the door so that I could always see my marks. Now we need to come down 36 and in 2 3/8 inches. So as we measure that and then we want to do the same thing on the other side. Simply measure down 36 inches and we are going to mark the 36 inch mark and then we are going to mark in 2 3/8 at that same level. That is how you mark for your deadbolt.
