Tools for Building a Small Stage: Design & Construction Tips
Hi I'm Grady Johnson and I'm the producer of Strange Company and today I'm representing expertvillage.com. Okay now we are going to go over and how to build a stage today and the first step is of course selecting our tools. There are certain amount of tools that you need to do this work and if you have these tools it would be a easier job for you. There are a few things that you want to have kind in arsenal when you are doing stage craft but today I'm going to go over specifically over the tools that we are going to need for this particular job. To start with in every kit you should have these basic items that is a hammer, a screwdriver, and some kind of pliers. Now that is always important just to always generally have anytime you are doing any kind of stage craft. Be sure to have about a 12 foot measuring tape. Be sure that it is workable it is not going to come apart on you. These roll up tapes there is all kinds of them and I use a carpenters pencil just cause I like to cut those up with my razor knife. Now we are going to be doing some cutting so once we get everything measure out you want to be sure and get your skill saw. Now I like this one because it is portable it does have a battery that fits in here just like it does with my drill it came together in a combo and then that way I could move with it. Now not all of them are portable just be sure that it is capable of cutting 2x4s and that you have a good sharp blade. Whenever you are doing any kind of saw work or any time things flying up in the air you do want to have some kind of a safety glass. These safety glasses are real cheap. I paid only about $5 for these you could spend up to 20 and you can get them really fancy but I just go as inexpensive as possible. Now because we are going to be putting in some light bulbs we are going to have to tighten those down. In order to tighten down lags and we are going to want to have some kind of socket set for one side and then a crescent wrench for the other. This is a little crescent wrench which I like it because it fits in my kit but you there is of course all different kinds of sizes. Now today also we are going to be putting the deck on we are going to be doing some screwing. When we are screwing and drilling and then we are going to need a good screwdriver. Now today we are actually going to drilling some holes for our lag bolts half inch holes and we are going to be using these paddle drills. We would be using the half inch here. Now when ever you use these paddle drills there is a little trick to them we would go over that with you as well. And be sure to have plenty of kits because you are going to be doing a lot of screwing with wood screws. To save time instead of doing a hole roller set up and a lot of clean up we want to do something quick it is kind of a smaller job for painting so we just have a good four inch brush that handles a lot of paint for us and a four inch will do the job very effectively. Also be sure to have a bucket that is really important to have a bucket to work out of and all the drops that you are going to need are that you are going to need you would see right here. Now remember to keep everything clean and you would never have any kind of issue on how you build your stage. When we do this kind of work we are in there we build that stage and we take it all out it is just like we were never there. We would go over that with you in a little bit today to but these are basically all the tools that you are going to need to do your carpenter and to do your painting to build your stage.
