How to Select the Right Size Pot for Your Plant
Hi, my name is Peggy Robertson on behalf of Expert Village.com and today in this clip I am going to talk to you about the importance of getting the right size pot for your plant. Now this is a good example of a good size pot and a plant. The plant is nice and compact and round, it sits on top of this pot and it is only going to grow this much taller this year. So then it will be nice and round on top and show off the pot below. That is a good balance if you want to show off your pot and there is enough room in that pot for those roots. Now imagine if I took that size plant and tried to stick it in a little teeny pot like this. That would not happen. I would have to chop off all the roots of the plant, the plant would start to die, it would be all crunched in, couldn’t breathe and I would have a dead plant on a pretty pot. No good. Now taking that same plant what would happen if I put in this pot. This is a standard 18 inch pot. I would have a little bitty bowl to plant and a big area around it and people would say where is the plant? Is it getting any bigger? What else is going in there and it is not very appealing to start with. This is the size pot you use for larger plants like a small tree or a bush. Now this is a perfect example of a plant that has gotten way too big for its own pot. When the tall tale signs the leaves are getting yellow, but the dead give away when you pull the leaves away you don’t see any dirt at all. So even though this big plant has a big pot it needs another pot, a good inch to 2 inch further out at the base.
