Rob McMahon with Expert Village. Now this plane doesn’t really give you the choice. It is a carbide bit. Once it’s trashed on both sides, you throw it away and get another one. There are planes that give you the choice of carbide or high speed steel. Now high speed steel can be sharpened and that is one benefit to it. Also, tend to burn less on hardwoods. I prefer the carbide although another drawback of the carbide is that if you do hit a nail or something hard, it could shatter and could tear up inside of the casing. The carbide is a little easier to set than the high speed steel especially if it has been sharpened a few times, then you got to keep pulling it further and further back. In my opinion, just buying a new blade is the best way to go but the choice is yours.
