Rob McMahon with Expert Village. We are going to talk a little bit safety and the power planer. Now these are always recommended. I don’t always wear them because these are scratched and a little hard to see through but you should always have a pair of safety glasses. Now when you are running your planer, you might be tempted to hold it, to support it on one side. I’ll use this hand and show you what I mean. When you are supporting there, the danger of your finger getting caught in this spinning blade is pretty good and that will take the tip of your finger off. The other thing that you need to be careful about is cutting too deep. With hard woods, you can jam it up and cause splinters to fly. You want to pay attention especially if you are working low like this to where the dust port is blowing out. I’ve got this one; it’s adjustable, so I can have it going out the other side but if I’m down here even with safety glasses, the force of the chips getting blown out of here and get around and get in my eyes cause lacerations.
After seeing this guy plane (power or otherwise) one-handed, on non-secured material, shows me he has no business trying to teach "safety". He may be a carpenter, but he doesn't seem to know the first thing about woodworking.
