De-interlacing Video in Final Cut Pro 5

This is C.J. South representing expertvillage.com. In this clip, I will finish up talking about freeze frames and de-interlacing. Now it is extremely important to remember about deinterlacing. What is de-interacing? Well de-interlacing, video is interlaced together. Like it's not an actual still picture. It's like two images that are sewn together to make a moving frame. I can't really explain it. All the technical definitions of it because I really don't even know. So all I know is that you need to de-interlace your video otherwise you will get flicker on a TV screen. It looks different on your computer monitor than it does on a TV monitor, a television. So if you have ever seen commercials that are done locally, sometimes they will have a still frame or a freeze shot and you will see somebody's arm like shaking, it's kind of like vibrating, that's because they didn't de-interlace that shot. This is one of the most amateur mistakes anyone can make but once you make it once, hopefully you will never make it again. So to de-interlace video you need to come up to your text tab, all right. You need to twirl down on your video filters and then take that down to the video bin and then de-interlace is right in there. Just click drag it right onto your clip. Now you can't see a difference on your computer monitor. It's just not noticeable. You can go to the filter here and you can change if you open up that clip by double clicking it, your freeze frame, and then go to the filter tab. You can change its field dominance which is upper, lower and then you have these flicker filters here but you can just go ahead and leave it at upper, that's fine. You can't see a difference here but on a TV it won't flicker. It will just be a nice still image. So it is very important that when your exporting to a television that is not a computer styled monitor, not an LCD, you need to make sure you go through any freeze frames that you have. You need to de-interlace them. Now that doesn't apply to normal pictures or graphics. Just freeze frames you have taken from moving video from DV, any frozen frames you take from that you need to de-interlace.
