How to Fit to Fill Edit: Final Cut Pro 5 Tutorial

This is C.J. South representing expertvillage.com. In this clip, I will explain to you how to use the fit and field edit. So now let's talk about the fit to field edit. Now a fit to field edit changes the speed of a clip in the viewer so that its duration matches the duration between your sequence in an outpoint. Now because the fit to field edit changes the speed of the edited clip, you may have to render it before it will play back. Most of the time any effect that is under 200 percent will be able to real time render. So most of the time you won't have to worry about it. Now also any audio items associated with that clip will change in pitch. So they will either move higher or lower so if you slow your clip down, you are going to get a really deep voice coming out of whatever audio is there and then reverse you get a really high voice when it is going really fast. So let's go ahead and let me show you this here real quick. For example, I have this 5 second clip down here in the time line. Its five seconds. I'm just going to go ahead and set my in and out points because I want to replace this clip. So you can either go to the edges and hit I and O or just hit the X key with your play head on top of it and that instantly puts in and out on that clip for me. So I want to replace it with a clip up here and I want to make lets see, I want it to be 3 seconds so let me just go up to duration here, the 300 for 3 seconds and now instantly it is made it 3 seconds in length. So now I am going to replace a 5 second clip with a 3 second clip which you know if I am trying to put it here into the time line obviously it's not large enough. So if I want to take up that entire space, I just drag it over to the canvas and up pops our edit overlay. I'm going to go down to fit to fill which is the green one fit to fill and just go ahead and drop it. Now you see it now has taken that entire space and you notice now too that it makes it a little larger. You notice now next to the tapes name is a percentage rating. So I had to slow that 3 second clip down to 59 percent in order to make it stretch that 5 seconds. Then if you watch it, it is moving in a little slow motion here.
