Edit the Default & Favorite Transitions in Final Cut Pro 5

Hi! This is C.J. South representing expertvillage.com. In this clip, I am going to talk to you about your default and favorite transitions and show you how you can change them. Final Cut Pro comes with the default transitions like we have been using this whole time which is a 1 second cross dissolve for the default transition and for the video transition, it's a plus 3 DB cross fade. So now you can change these. I've been saying that probably a bazillion times during the last few videos. Yeah, you can change them so now I will show you how to change those. Now why would you want to. Well, if you have 30 edit points in your time line and you want to have the same transition to, it might be a good idea to favorite that are put that to the default transition. It is just a matter of saving you time and effort which are both very important. So to change a default you can do it a couple of different ways. The first way what we will do is just select the effects tab; go up to the effects tab up in the browser and let's find a transition that we want. Let's make it a wipe, okay. So a band wipe. Let's make that the default transition. All I have to do is just go up to the effects and then go down to set default. Now band wipe is our set default. So let's go ahead and try adding a default. Right click the edit point, add transition band wipe. There it is. The default transition. Another way you can do it is to just go ahead in your effects tab in the browser and just right click it and then click set default transition. So now we check this one by right clicking and now that one, the checker wipe transition is set. Now you can also save transitions into your favorites folder up here at the top. Now why would you want to put them in your favorites. Well let's say for example for this checker wipe transition, I change the duration on it and I changed some parameters and I want to save it. I don't want to have to rechange everything every time I bring that filter in. So to save it again, there is a couple of different ways you can do that first of which being just click and dragging it and then dropping it right into your favorites folder. Now you can also just name this transition too so you could call it checker sweetness. That's a good name for it. I'm sure it is pretty sweet if you customize it. Now you have a favorites. You can add as many as you want to your favorites so that way if there is some that you use constantly, you can go right up to your favorites folder. You don't have to search through all these folders for the one you want. You can throw one in from slide and throw one in for Iris and one for MAC and that way they will all just be in one folder. Now you can also pull in favorites from your fax tab right here So it let's me pull down my Iris. Let's do a cross Iris so I can just click and drag that right into my favorites. No problem. Absolutely no problem. You can also add folders so I can just add an entire folder if I really wanted to. To delete these all you have to do is just select it and then hit the delete key; easy as that.
