Setting & Navigating Markers in the Timeline in Final Cut Pro 5

Hi! This is CJ South representing expertvillage.com, in this clip I’m going to show you how to set and navigate markers in the timeline. So what is a marker? Well a marker is just a point of interest that you marked, just like if you were to go through a book and stick a marker and kind of check off some of the things that you want to remember or want to come back to, you’re doing the same thing here it’s kind of like a pro in the timeline you’re just doing it digitally, so how do you add markers? Well just go ahead and put your play head wherever there’s an important event like maybe you want to put a cut at this clip or you’d like to start a filter here or whatever and just go ahead and hit the M key and as you can see I have now made a little green tab and that’s called a marker and when my cursor is over the marker you’ll notice up in the canvas it says marker 1, it has the name of the marker I’ll show you how to name that later but now you can also snap to makers so it’s really nice when you need to get precise and you want to like lay it down here and then go somewhere else and then come back to it, it’s great for that and one of the great features about markers is you can add markers while you’re playing footage. So I can just hit the spacebar to play and I can just hit M key and every time I hit the M key I’m creating a new marker so you can go as far as you want with this with as many markers as too many possible it’s up to you. Now to navigate through these is a nice little quick key for you, I’m just going to go ahead and get rid of these real quick, a nice little quick key which is the shift key and the upper down arrow, so if I hit shift and the up arrow I go backwards, if I hit shift and the down arrow I go then to the next marker so you can navigate through your markers like that, it’s a lot easier than you know dragging and snapping to it finding that snap point.
