Hand Puppet: Making Mouth

Now we're ready to put another layer of felt for the inside of the puppet to make the mouth. This is going to be seen when the mouth opens, it opens and shuts, so the type of felt, the color that you use is very important. It should definitely contrast with the main color of the puppet, the outer layer. The way we do this is we lay the puppet flat on the table and we fold down the top flap. So now that both flaps are actually exposed we're going to put glue around the edges and we're going to take our felt, the second piece, and it hasn't been cut yet, we're going to do that afterwards when we shape it once it's glued. So we have to put the second piece of felt on top of the glue. It's very important that you remember to fold it because it's going to have to sit on both sides. When it opens up it's going to have to be the bottom layer of the mouth and the top layer of the mouth. So it's very important that you fold it over and put it as close to the edge just to make it easier for cutting. And then you go ahead and put the top fold down. And now we see that when we open it up the two flaps are covering it from the outside and we can open and close the puppet and we'll see the white on the inside. This will be the mouth of the puppet. So it's important to remember that when you put the piece of felt, the second piece of felt on top of the glue just remember that it should be folded, it should not, don't lay it open and just lay it on top of the glue because then you'll only have one layer of the mouth and you wont be able to put your hand in side to open and close it. So we fold it in half, lay it on top of the glue and then just put the top flap down on top of that second layer. And then once we've done that we're going to shape it afterwards. We see that it's much easier now to shape it because if we would have shaped it before you wouldn't have gotten the exact shape. It would have been hard to get the exact shape of the mouth of the puppet. So now once it's inside we can just cut around the sides and we know that it'll be a nice perfect fit. So now I've shown you how to take the second piece of felt and apply it to the first layer and create the mouth of the puppet that's going to open and shut.
