How to Thread a Sewing Machine: Part 1
On behalf of expertvillage.com my name is Neal Jones and I’m with A Perfect Alterations, 102 Main Street, Burleson, Texas, our phone number is 817-447-3522. Now one of the most critical parts and one of the most misunderstood parts of a sewing machine is the threading. Now I would say that a good 60-70 % of the machines that people think aren’t working properly is due to wrong threading, so the threading is very, very important. Fist part of threading, we have spool pins, now these spool pins are very, very, important, the first spool pin is built into the machine and it has a guide on the front of it, now we would put our thread. Another real important part of threading is to make sure that we put the thread in the right direction, now when we buy the thread from the store, you’ll find that the end of the thread is caught into the top of the spool of thread now there’s a little notch cut in there, well that notch can really hurt us if we don’t realize that it’s there and if we don’t account for it while we’re threading the machine, we put our thread onto the spool pin and we put the cover over the top. Now the cover as you can see, is a little bit larger than the spool of thread and that is to make sure that while the thread is coming out, it is pushed away from these rough areas and it doesn’t get caught on the spool of thread, so we’ll push that over there and put the cover on. We also have an auxiliary spool thread, now every once in a while, while we’re sewing patterns on a machine as we move past the basic part of sewing, we would have a needle which would be a double needle that would require that we have two threads, now sometimes you would use two threads that are the same color that run through this or you can use two different colored threads and they would run through the same area and they would then go through a double needle and give you a double stitch on the bottom of the machine. Now when we use a double needle, we really don’t have to do anything with the bottom of the machine and all the rest of it is all up here. Now as we come off of the spool pin, there is a guide here that is spring loaded just a little bit and the guide is there to make sure that we have the proper tension on the spool pin.
