Footwear for Beginning Ballroom Dancing
Hi! On behalf of expertvillage.com, I’m Kelly-Anne and I’m here with my partner Fred. We will be demonstrating basic ballroom dancing. Let’s talk a little about shoes now. What kind of shoes should I wear to dance? If you’re just starting out, the ladies should be wearing something with an ankle strap and the gentlemen, a closed toe comfortable shoe. If you get a little more into the sport, you may want to invest in some ballroom dancing shoes. There’s 2 styles; there’s Latin and smooth shoes. What we’re wearing right now are Latin style shoes. Ballroom shoes have felt bottoms on them and make it easier to slide across the floor. If you look at Kelly’s Latin heel, it’s very flexible and she can point her toes. They are very light also. Mine is a Latin heel also. Very flexible and very, very light. Makes a large difference when you’re dancing. One aspect of ballroom dancing that we must as beginners keep in mind is we don’t want to look down. The head is the heaviest part of your body. You lose contact with your partner and balance when you look down. You don’t want to be doing this no matter what dance you’re doing; rumba, foxtrot, quickstep. Try to resist looking down. Your feet are the same as when you woke up this morning trust me. We invite you to join a local dance studio. They’ll be more than happy to have you. They accept singles and couples. We recommend starting with 10 lessons; it could be a combination of groups and privates. Then similar around 25 lessons you should feel confident social dancing.
