There are two types of subwoofer that you can use for your home entertainment system. An active which is a powered speaker with its own built in power supply or passive speaker which will require the use of an outside power source such as an amplifier. A passive or non-powered speaker will not have a built in power supply and most likely will have a speaker wire connection.
