Tee Pee Style: How to Build a Fire

Hi! My name is Dan and I’m here for Expert Village. Right now, I’m going to show you how to build a tee-pee fire. You want to start out with your kindling; old newspaper works great. Crinkle it up. I find it works well to tie a small overhand knot in your paper to keep it together. You want to make a few of these little bundles. Place them in the center of where your fire is going to be and put some of your fire starter on top of it, some of your kindling. Make a pile of small twigs, and then build a small tee-pee using some of your mid-sized firewood. It’s nice to have wood of all the same size, so that when the fire is burning it’s very symmetrical. Also, by having all the wood pointing in toward the center of your fire, when it starts to burn down you can push it into the fire, as appose to having to roll. Once you have a good base of small sticks, you can start adding some larger ones. The tee-pee fire is nice for throwing a lot of heat. It’s as good as a campfire, appose to for cooking on. The reason for this is it leaves a cone shaped pile of ash, which is hard to balance a fire pan on. Another nice thing about the tee-pee fire is when it’s burning down, since the flame is coming from underneath, when your wood burn through it naturally burns toward the center of the fire, which makes feeding it a little bit easier. Those are the basics of building a tee-pee fire.
