Tuning Lug 1 of a Floor Tom Bottom Head

Hello! My name is Aaron Moon and I’m here today on behalf of expertvillage.com and we’re in the process of tuning the bottom head of a floor tom. Now we’ve cranked each lug a total of two times each and this has brought the tension on the head because essentially when we crank these lugs it’s pulling down, it’s pulling the rim down on the drum head, it’s pulling it down to create a pitch and the tighter you screw these lugs in the higher pitch you get but what we have now is not our end result we just have tighten the head. So what we want to do is you want to start with one and we can either use our finger or we can use a drumstick I personally like to use a finger on the center of the drum if I hit right next to lug number one right now I’m getting that sound. If I put my finger here it makes the tone resonate a little clear it’s easier for the ear to pick up. Now you want the lower head to be a higher pitch than the top head, now we haven’t touched the top head but we know for a floor tom it’s going to produce a low pitch. So we’ll start in, you’re just going to want to pick a pitch that sounds good to you…you can play with it, feel free to hum along if it helps, if it helps get the pitch in your head and since this is all out of tune you’re going to get a few different pitches in there and humming the pitch can help clarify what you’re actually getting from this first lug.
