Kitchen Safety Tips & Techniques

Hi! I’m Lisa Krone and I’m here with Best Epicurean on behalf of expertvillage.com and I am going to talk about a little kitchen safety. We all have incidents that happen but I am going to over some things that we can avoid some problems. So one of the things that we have when dealing in the kitchen is things get hot so what I love to do is I ran over to my local mass market or store and I grabbed this bamboo mat. It is actually a place mat and I can use to put hot stuff on. I just happed to heat up my toaster oven a few minutes ago so I have a hot pan; nothing good on it to eat right now but I just wanted to use it as an example. I put my toaster oven pan on there and I don’t have to worry about it burning my Formica or damaging, making my granite too hot or any other substance that you have here. The next safety item is unplugging your toaster oven. You don’t want to have any mishaps in the middle of the night with electrical sparks or anything like that. The other thing I used to put hot stuff on is I bought these; these are really inexpensive. They are just made out of some sort of bamboo or hay or something like that and I placed hot things on them and they are a great size. You don’t want to make them too big. They are great for pots or maybe a coffee pot. You could put them on there. When dealing with cooking in a frying pan, when you are working on your stove here, the pan can get extremely hot as well so when I am dealing with hot stuff, I always make sure I have the oven mitt ready to go. We don’t want to have any problems. I’m sure a lot of you like to use pizza stones when making pizza. We don’t make pizza on anything else. What happens is when I go and I take it or can happen, you go and pull your pizza out and you are ready to cook and your hand goes like that. Ow! You want to make sure you have your pizza mitt close by. If you do get a burn on your hand and I am not a doctor so I am not giving any medical advice but I am going to share with you what I do. The first thing that I will do with that burn is run it under very very cold water and then probably I will stick some ice in a plastic bag and keep it on there. After I have iced it down for a while and it starts to get a little bit of a scab or what not, I’ll put some Aloe Vera gel on it. You want to use the clear one and you can get this in any supermarket. Just ask your grocer where they find it. The other thing you want to make sure that you do is when you are dealing with knives and this is my big cleaver, when I’m done with this thing I clean it and put it away because little tiny hands love to go over there and the next thing you know you are handling a cut on a young person. One of the last things that I like to keep with me is a kitchen towel. If something spills on the ground, especially if you have tile or ceramic, somebody comes by and the next thing you know they slam their head and you have a bigger problem than just a wet spill on the floor. So keep in mind that you want to unplug any of your appliances and you also want to make sure that your oven and your stove is off. That is a little kitchen safety that I have shared with you today.
