Making Pants Bracelets: Cutting Waist Band

Today we're going to make--we're going to do three things. Take an old pair of jeans and make a bracelet. We're going to make patches, and we're going to do a new... we're going to redesign these so that they fit. The first one that we're going to do, though, is we're going to make a bracelet out of the waistband, and that does two things: cut the waistband off of the jeans, and these are about two sizes too small; once you cut the waistband off they fit around the waist again and you don't have to go out and wreck more trees or kill more things for more product, you've already got it right here. So, the first thing you want to do, try to make sure you've got a snap--or, rather than a snap, a button--because that will help with the waist. First thing you want to do, if you're going to keep the jeans in tact, which we are, kind of want to look over them. Look at the pockets, notice you're going to cutting all this. So, we're going to take the back pockets off. We're not concerned with the front pocket, but this seam right here will make this front pocket pretty much just for looks, so it won't work anymore. So you've kind of got to look and decide what you want to do. If you want to leave some belt loops up at the top or at the bottom. Don't just start cutting away until you've kind of looked through everything. Got to find any weak spots in the jeans, like this hole right here--we're going to want to make sure that we don't cut down into that or it just kind of defeats the purpose. So, I just use a little razor blade. Turn the jeans inside out, and just really carefully for the first one or two, just go in--and don't want to go too far or too fast until you've got just about a quarter of an inch where you can kind of pull it open and you can see the thread. So, go ahead and do that and we'll move on to step two.
