Hi! I’m Lisa Krone and I’m here with Best Epicurean on behalf of expertvillage.com and right now we are going to talk about how to prepare to cook with the proper tools. I’ve laid out some tools here for everybody. The first thing I want to talk about is you must have a decent pair of kitchen scissors in your kitchen because more often than or not you are going to have a bag of pasta because you are going to need open and if you don’t have scissors, you are unbearably are going to go hmm, and your pasta will be thrown all over the kitchen and that is the end of your meal, so keep that in mind. This is one of my number one tools that I use a lot. Another tool that I use is a griddle and I love this thing and with that because it is a non-stick surface which I am sure most of us use. You need what I call a fat spatula. This is great for pancakes or even if you are making something like blintzes or egg rolls or something like that you are cooking on the griddle. You need to pick them up and flip them, so this is the tool I would use with this particular griddle. Another thing you need is a small sauce pot and this one is nice and heavy. It has a non-stick surface and with that one of the things that I love to make is pudding. However, a lot of our whisks are made out of metal and that is a big no-no with non-stick. Even with your free coat antitoxin stick, I still recommend going out and buying a nylon whisk. You just go like that and you have homemade pudding in about two or three minutes. The other pan that I use an awful lot is this one. I can cook hamburgers or steaks or chicken breast and with that I like to use a smaller spatula. A steel nylon based because we have the non-stick surface. You don’t want to scratch it; once you scratch it you really can’t use it and it is no recommended that you use it. So we don’t want to use that. The other tool that I use is I use this for making soups and pasta and all those other things is the stock pot. This is great for just about anything and it is also really good for making chili and stuff like that. My favorite tool to use with that one is the wooden spoon. I love that and you don’t have to worry about your wooden spoon scratching your non-stick surface, so you are in good shape. Just a little while ago I made some pasta and mixed it with some butter and Parmesan cheese and garlic and I moved that around with my wooden spoon but the other thing I can move with it is, I like to use these rubber or silicon spatulas. This one is a soft one which will be great with your pasta but you don’t want to use that with something that is a little harder that you might use on your griddle. That one should be a harder, shorter spatula. The last thing I like to use is my tongs. It is great for when you are picking up. Maybe you are making potato pancakes or something like that and that is how you use different tools in the kitchen when you are getting ready to cook.
