Hi! I’m Lisa Krone and I’m here for Best Epicurean on behalf of expertvillage.com and today we are going to talk about food portions for elementary school children. So if you have a child between the ages of 6 and 11 or 12, depending at what age your kid goes off to middle school, you want to make sure they are getting enough vitamins and iron and everything in their food and enough to eat at each meal. So I’ve prepared a couple of foods over here. I’ve made some pasta with Parmesan cheese, butter and a little bit of garlic, but not too much because you don’t want to turn the kids off from the taste of spices, herbs and different things. So what I would do is I love to use a small paper bowl and what I would do is fill that to the very top. With that, this is an excellent portion to give your elementary school child. They should be able to finish the whole thing. If I were to feed this to an adult, I would probably fit this into a bowl that is at least a third size bigger and for a toddler, half this amount. I also made some pizza. I have a little pizza right here. Elementary school kids love to eat with their hands even though especially when they are eating pizza, so the first thing I would do is I would take a really sharp knife and I would cut this pizza in half and this is a good size pizza. I would think that an adult could eat this with a salad and be very happy. I would cut it up into pea size so they could pick it up and eat it like this and I would then place it on a paper plate. With kids I love to use paper because number 1, it is easy and number 2, sometimes it ends up on the floor, so what I like to do is do that. Now if you see these food portions with the Parmesan cheese, the kid gets an excellent supply of protein, carbohydrates and vitamins and your pasta does contain protein. You can buy pasta that has added protein if you want to make sure your child gets more protein and the pizza has everything: the carbohydrates, you can put some veggies on here, serve it with some carrots, apples or something like that and that is how you would make a proper size of food portion that you would give to elementary school students.
