Common Kitchen Appliances

Hi! I’m Lisa Krone and I am with Best Epicurean on behalf of expertvillage.com. Today we are going to talk about the appliances that we use for cooking. The first one I would like to talk about is the stove. A lot of times folks aren’t really sure how to use one, believe it or not, and in my experience of teaching cooking lessons, I spend a little bit of time on how to use the stove. One of the things that you may want to keep in mind when using a stove is you want to use the one that has the right size burner. So for example, I have three large burners and I have one small burner; so if I am going to be using something small, I will give you an example here, with my brickie which makes Turkish coffee, I am going to put that on the small one because on the large one it is overkill. Mine is really easy to turn on. We are going to do the front one here, you just turn it, you hear that clicking noise and there it turns on and you turn it to the fire that you want. I recommend when you start a dish that you probably should start on around 5 or 6 and not go too much higher and that would be the same with an electric oven as well. Always make sure you turn your burners off and your oven off when you are finished. I’ve also added something really neat. I was able to get this piece of granite; I was looking at something granite counter tops and they sent me a sample. This is great for warming food while you are cooking. I just leave them right here on my oven and then when I am finished with something, I will put it on there and it stays nice and warm. With the oven, you have your instructions right here that you can follow. There are a couple of mistakes that people make; one, they leave their light on forever. That’s an expensive thing to fix so if you want to, make sure your oven light is off. Also, you want to make sure that your oven is off when you are finished because that is not a good idea and we always want to employ safety in the kitchen. If you are also cooking with small children around, I suggest that you use the back burners. On our microwave, the types of things that you are going to use in a microwave are not something you want to see browned. So you are going to use your microwave primarily for heating up food and you need to be careful; every microwave is different. So you should use a food that you know what it should look like when it is heated up and test it on your microwave and you will get a good idea of how to use it. This one is almost brand new, so we had to go through the whole test cycle with it. The other tool that I use all the time is my toaster oven. This is when I don’t need the big oven as overkill and I just want to heat maybe some chicken nuggets or some pizza and that is how you use kitchen tools when you are cooking.
