Creating Niches in your Straw Bale Home
Alright we’re going to be giving a little bit of an example on creating a niche- a little indoor space. It’s typically something you can cut out with your chain saw and carve it to the shape you want it. I kind of have it turned around right now but this will be like a little ledge here. A lot times it’s actually easier to put your plaster in by hand at first and kind of work it in. So we’re just going to kind of work the plaster in. And I’m having a little bit of trouble with my plaster here. Kind of smooth it out as you go. Shape it- you want to make it the shape that you want it to be. And you can use a trowel but sometimes it’s easer to get that initial coating here with your hands. You can press it in with your fingers into all the little nooks and crannies. We’re going to create a little ledge here. I was going to create a ledge on this side here, but I’m going to create a little ledge on this side just to give you an idea. And then you would plaster the whole back of it here, and you could bring this out and plaster it and build it up, do whatever you want with the plaster, make it flat so you can set things on it- you can do whatever you want. Plaster’s real versatile that way. See if you can smooth it out a little bit. And you’re going to need several coats of the plaster, probably about three coats of plaster until it’s finished. And just build it up and encircle it the way you want. You can add lighting cans and all kinds of things to display statues and whatever you want with these niches. They’re beautiful, they’re handy, and they’re there. So use them.
