Teleprompting: Starting a Business

Now I'll discuss starting your own teleprompter business. When I started my business in Dallas, Texas in 1986, there was not a lot of competition. Dallas was a booming town in our industry. Conventions, shows, commercials, and a great deal of corporate work to be had as well. Before I started my business, I researched the market need in my city and even in nearby cities and states. I discovered there were just two teleprompter companies in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. And only one had a computerized teleprompter at the time. There certainly was room for me. That year I attended NAB or National Association for Broadcasters convention, and looked at all the teleprompter software and hardware companies there. I decided on Telescript and I've used them ever since. My first computerized system was run on a Commodore 64. My competition was running off of an Atari. Both of them were game computers, but at that time they could handle the graphics for teleprompting. In those days, seventeen inch monitors were used for shoots and shows. Very heavy equipment indeed, but very effective. The cameras were larger and heavier too, so balancing the camera set up was less intensive. It took a few months, but once I got the word out that I was the new gal in town with a new computerized teleprompter system, my business took off.
