I see in this video that there's taking a step before making the jumping moves; i.e., Aaron's building up momentum before raising one leg and then snap-kicking with the other in the air. It must depend on how much room you have, since, if the dojang space is more limited, or you're sparring, so you and your opponent are relatively close, that first step might not be able to be used. For training purposes, or just the enjoyment of the art, that first step must add to height. I did notice that Aaron's jumping/flying area has a padded surface. That's a big plus for the knees; training in this kick means doing it repeatedly, and so landing repeatedly on a harder surface than Aaron's has more impact on the knees.

Tae Kwon Do Flying Front Snap Kick

Hi this is Aaron Fruitstone from Chi Martial Arts in Miami Shores, Florida. You can reach us on the web at www.chimartialarts.com. The next technique that you’ll be learning is flying front snap kick. Flying in Tae Kwon Do dictates that you’re flying or going towards your opponent in the air. We have other techniques that have different terminology for going back and to the sides. Flying is advancing into your opponent. Again in tournament in Tae Kwon Do, you’ll receive more points for mid air, jumping straight up, or flying techniques to your opponent. Two if you kick the body when you’re in the air, three if you kick the head when you’re in the air. Flying front snap kicks, if you’re kicking with your rear leg, involve advancing or taking a step. So you’ll first with the right leg, lifting the left knee switch in the air kick with the right leg, and return to your starting position. Again, step, lift the opposite leg in the air, switch kick with the right leg. At normal speed. And from the side, step, lift, switch and kick. Normal speed. We’ll be back.
