Hello! My name is Melissa Schenk and on behalf of expertvillage.com, today we’re talking about some basic tips for playing the game set. Okay, so we’ve gone through some examples of what sets are. You’re starting to figure out what qualifies as a set and what doesn’t. Right now, what I’m going to do is share with you the golden rule, or the magic rule. When you’re asking yourselves these questions, it’s kind of like the magic rule. You’ve got it posted up here for you. You might want to write this down so you don’t forget it. The magic rule is very simple. If 2 of the cards are and one is not, then it is not a set. What I mean by that is if 2 of the cards are all the same color, for instance, and one is not, it is not a set. If 2 of the cards are all of the same symbol and one is not, it’s not going to be a set. Ask yourselves the question with number and shading. If 2 are and 1 not, then it is not a set. For instance, let’s have a look at this one. This is not a set, but if you’re looking for color, for instance, 2 are purple, 1 is not, then it’s not a set because you’d have to have red in there somewhere for it to be all different. Now, these aren’t a set for many different reasons. Ask yourselves a question about the symbol. If 2 are and 1 is not, then it wouldn’t be a set, but you can see here you’ve got 3 different shapes. It potentially could qualify as a set. Except our problem here is color; you’ve got 2 purples so they’re not a set. You also look at the shading; 2 are and 1 is not. It’s not going to be a set because one of these would have to be in a different shaded pattern, such as the striped pattern right in there. Ask yourself that magic rule question. If 2 are and 1 is not, well then it’s not going to be a set.
