Mancala Rules of Starving
Hello! My name is Melissa Schenk and on behalf of expertvillage.com, we are discussing strategy techniques today for playing the game Mancala. So in our next strategy technique, we like to call this technique starving, starving your opponent basically for marbles or stones. So, let’s go to the board once again, and I will demonstrate the technique of starving. Starving is basically what I like to call…Well we call it starving because you’re refusing to repopulate your opponent’s side with pebbles. Basically, you are playing your own game on your own side and you’re starving your opponent with stones. In this case, if I was playing on this side, for instance, I would take the stones in A and I would sow them. As you know we put 1 in each of the smaller bins, so 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Now, when your last stone falls in that larger Mancala, you therefore get another turn. So if I take stones out of Ds bin, 1, 2, 3, I get another turn. You can see that we are starving this side of the board because we are not repopulating it in our counterclockwise motion. I keep going again and again, but with stones on my side of the board. You can see C, I get another turn here. 1, 2, 3, 4. I would get to go again, and if you notice here, you’ve got an empty Mancala or an empty smaller bin. If I take this stone to B, put it into C, then I get all the stones out of J and C. Now, I don’t get to go again, but you can see just by doing those various moves and starving your opponent, I’ve collected up to 2, 4, 6, 7 stones all in those various moves.
