Hi, my name is Chell Garcia-Trias, and I'm a modern dance instructor in Austin Texas. I'm going to show you a standing hip stretch, that will go really deep into your hip. Make sure you only go to where you're comfortable. With any stretch you really want to work with your own body's limitations, and only you know what those are. So, I'm going to stand with my feet turned out a little bit, and I'm going to bend my right leg, and gently slide my left leg out to where my sits bone is reaching for my heal, they're very close, maybe an inch apart. My other leg is reaching out as far as it can, and my toe is just relaxed. My hips are opening up, and I'm just going to sit here and take some deep breaths. If I want to take the stretch a little deeper, if this feels really comfortable, I might reach out with my straight leg, the same arm as my straight leg. As I reach out, I can drop my head, and I can really feel that go deeper. Take deep breaths while you're there. When I'm ready I'll come back up. And I'll switch sides just by bending the other leg, and straightening my bent leg, so I just reach for the other side. And I reach, the same leg is straight as the arm, and I reach out. Now my foot here can be on the ground, or I can be on my toe, whatever is more comfortable for you. Some people don't have that flexibility in their heel, and that's fine. This is about opening up our hips not our heels. So once I'm done with this stretch, then I'll use my hands to come back up. I'll walk my feet back in, and I'll stand up. That's a great way to get a nice deep stretch in our hips in modern dance.
