Modern Dance Leg Extension Downward Dog

Hi my name is Chell Garcia-Trias and I'm a modern dance instructor in Austin Texas; I'm going to show you how to do a leg extension to open up the hips in downward dog the way that we would do it in modern dance. So first we're going to get in a downward dog position; we're just going to put our hands on the ground and tuck our toes under, and reach out heels for the ground while we reach our hips for the sky and then what I'm going to do is I'm going to reach out with my foot and up; and then I'm going to bend my knee so that my foot is coming over my body, it'll be easier for you to see if I do it with you. So I'm going to out my hands on the ground; I'm going to tuck my toes under, reach my heels for the ground while I reach my hips for the sky; I'm going to drop my shoulders here and then I'm going to reach out with my foot, out and up; out and up, out and up; out and up, I'm going to open up my hip here and I'm going to drop my foot; and bend my knee so that I'm really opening up my hip. I'm going to push through my leg; threw my toe to straighten my leg here if I want to, if that feels good; if it doesn't then I'll just hang out there bent kneed, this is just to open up my hip so where ever you're comfortable with this is where you should be. Don't push this stretch; it should feel good, it should feel like an opening up in the spine. I need to remember to push threw my arms the whole time so I can really feel both of my hips opening up; when I'm ready I'm going to bring my foot towards the ground gently and I'm going to come back to my knees, and sit back down. So that's a great way to do a leg extension to open up your hips in modern dance in the downward dog position.
