Hi, my name is Chell Garcia-Trias, and I'm a modern dance instructor in Austin, Texas. I'm going to show you how to do a balanced leg extension to the side in modern dance. So first of all I'm going to plant my feet in the ground, I'm going to make sure that my feet feel very planted so that I can balance on one leg. I might take a couple little bounces to really feel that my feet are pushing in the ground. When I'm ready I'm going to bend my standing leg, and then I'm also going to bend the leg that I am going to grab. I'm going to catch my foot in my hand and I'm slowly going to straighten it out to the side. If I need to I can hold the wall, or I can hold a chair with my opposite arm as the leg that's up. And it's really important that you only do this if it's comfortable. If you're not comfortable, don't straighten your leg out all the way, hold onto a chair, just go to where you feel a good stretch. So I'm going to bend my legs, I'm going to reach for the center of my foot, and then slowly, I'm going to reach out with my right arm while I straighten out my left leg, and I'm going to drop my hip the whole time, drop my shoulders the whole time. And I'm going to stand here and I'm just going to breathe, breathe while I push through my foot. When I'm ready I'll bend my foot and bring it back to my knee and I'll put it down on the ground. It's really important that I drop through this hip the whole time also. So that's a great leg extension with balance in modern dance.
