Modern Dance Plank Position

Hi, my name is Chell Garcia-Trias, and I'm a modern dance instructor in Austin, Texas. I'm going to show you how to find the proper alignment in the plank position the way you would in modern dance. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to get in a push up position, but I'm going to make sure that when I do, my bottom is not sticking out. I really want to flatten my back and reach all the way from my head to the heels of my feet, so that I'm as flat as possible. And when I'm in that position, I'm going to bounce on my feet a little bit so that I'm making sure to keep that flat back, keep my bottom down, and I'm really going to find what proper alignment is while I'm there. So, first I'm going to get in the push up position. I'm going to make sure to drop my shoulders a little bit so that I'm not hunched. I'm going to make sure to not stick my bottom out, and drop it. And my toes are gently resting on the floor. I'm going to look at the floor, and reach through the top of my head so that my neck is also not bending anywhere. And then when I feel like I found it, I'm going to bounce gently on my toes so that I feel like I'm reaching for the top of my head, and through my heels. And you can really tell in this position if you have proper alignment. If I'm like this, the bounce feels completely different. If I have a flat back, and I'm not bent at the hips, then I can really feel that I'm reaching through my spine. So, you can sit here and do this for a couple minutes and when you're tired, just take a break. And so that is a great way to find proper alignment in the plank position for modern dance.
