Positions of Balanced Forces in Abalone
Hello! My name is Melissa Shank and on behalf of expertvillage.com, today we are discussing some basic tips and techniques on playing the game Abalone. Now in this next segment we talked about it earlier in clips about the word Sumito and that is when you are pushing your opponents marbles off of the board. It is a position of superiority. Now we need to talk about the word pack. If we head to the board here, I will explain what pack is. A pack is basically a position of balanced forces. You are packing your marbles together so to speak. So there are really only 3 possible pack positions. Of course you can have a 1 to 1 pack. It's kind of a stand off. You can't move these marbles because they are of equal superiority. So you can have a 1 to 1 pack, a 2 to 2 pack and of course here, a 3 to a 3 pack. Now what you have to keep in mind is that if you were to have more marbles for instance, let's say black had 4 marbles and white had 3 so if you have any more than 3 marbles of the same color in line, it doesn't change that 3 to 3 stand off. You have to remember we are only at each move here dealing with 1 marble, 2 or 3. So in this case here even though we have a 4 to 3 stand off, it doesn't matter. You still have a 3 to 3 pack here and you can't make that move.
