Playing Dotted Notes on Classical Guitar

Hi my name is John Armstrong with expertvillage.com I'm a professional guitar instructor and today we are going to be discussing beginning classical guitar. Next I will like to discuss dotted notes. A dot placed behind the note increases that notes value by half of the notes original value. For example in a case of a dotted quarter note, a regular quarter note gets one beat, half of one is one-half so 1+1/2 is a beat in a 1/2. A dotted quarter note will get a beat in a 1/2. In the case of a half note a dotted ½ note a half typically is 2 beats ½ of 2 is 1. 1+2 is 3 therefore a dotted ½ note gets 3 beats. These are the 2 types of dotted notes that we see a lot of dotted quarter notes and the dotted half note. There is also the dotted 8th note. In the exercise that I have given you here is example it is in 3,4 time it has a lot of example of dotted quarter notes. As you could see in this exercise that dotted quarter is typically followed up by either a 8th note or in some cases a 8th rest. It would get a beat and a ½ for example the 1st measure here in 3,4 time we are going to be going ready beginning. 1,2 and 3. That 8th note the F note is going to come in on the and of 2. Again 1,2 and 3. okay. The exercise in this entirety is something like this 1,2,3,1,2 and 3,1,2 and 3,1,2 and 3,1,2,3,1,2, and 3,1,2, and 3,1,2 and 3,1,2,3. Note the dotted half note at the end how it gets the full 3 beats. Dotted half notes are very common in 3,4 times they could also be use in 4,4 time.
